What You Need to Apply to US Universities After Class 12

Standardised Tests

  • SAT — Most competitive universities expect 1400–1580 for strong consideration. Some universities are now test-optional but a strong score still helps.
  • AP Exams — Advanced Placement exams in relevant subjects (Calculus, Physics, CS) demonstrate academic rigour and can earn college credits.

Academic Requirements

  • Class 10 and 12 transcripts with strong grades — 85–95% depending on the university
  • Predicted marks letter from your school if Class 12 results are not yet published

English Proficiency

  • IELTS 7.0+ or TOEFL 100+ for competitive universities
  • Some universities accept strong CBSE English marks in lieu of IELTS/TOEFL — check individually

Application Components

  • Common App or Coalition App — Most US universities use one of these platforms
  • Personal Statement / College Essay — 650 words about who you are and what matters to you. This is one of the most important parts of a US application.
  • Supplemental Essays — Many universities require additional essays: “Why our university?” and others
  • Letters of Recommendation — Typically 2 teacher recommendations + 1 counsellor recommendation
  • Extracurriculars — Leadership roles, research, competitions, community service all matter significantly

My honest advice from 20+ years: US admissions — especially at selective universities — look at the whole person, not just marks. A student with 88% who has led meaningful projects, written a genuine personal essay, and demonstrated intellectual curiosity can outperform a student with 95% and a generic application.

Cost of a US Bachelor’s Degree

ExpenseAnnual Cost (USD)Annual Cost (INR approx.)

A 4-year US bachelor’s degree from a top private university is a significant investment. This is why scholarships and financial aid research is critical.

Scholarships and Financial Aid for Indian Students in the USA

The USA is unique among study destinations — many universities offer need-based and merit-based financial aid to international students:

  • MIT, Harvard, Princeton — Meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students, including international students. A student from a modest Indian family admitted to these universities may pay far less than expected.
  • University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Yale — Also offer need-blind or need-aware aid to international students
  • Merit scholarships at mid-tier universities — Arizona State, Purdue, UMass, and many others offer substantial merit scholarships of USD 5,000–20,000/year to attract strong international students

Always apply for financial aid when applying to US universities, even if you think you will not qualify. Many Indian families with incomes well above average Indian standards still receive meaningful US financial aid.

F-1 Student Visa for After Class 12

The process for an F-1 visa is the same regardless of degree level:

  1. Receive your I-20 from the university
  2. Pay SEVIS fee (USD 350)
  3. Complete DS-160 form online
  4. Book US Embassy/Consulate appointment in India
  5. Attend the interview — be ready to clearly explain why you chose this university and program, and demonstrate strong ties to India

After Graduation: OPT and STEM OPT

  • All F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT)
  • STEM graduates (Engineering, CS, Data Science, Life Sciences, etc.) qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension — totalling 3 years of US work authorisation
  • This 3-year window is significant for building a US career and potentially pursuing an H-1B visa
