Cost of Living in New York City
NYC is the most expensive city in the USA for students. Expect monthly costs of USD 2,200–3,000 (INR 1.85–2.5 lakhs) including rent, food, transit (MetroCard), health insurance, and personal expenses. On-campus or university-affiliated housing is strongly recommended to control costs.
F-1 Visa for NYC Universities
Same process as all US universities: receive I-20, pay SEVIS fee, book US Embassy appointment in India, gather documents (financial proof, admission letter, transcripts), attend interview. Interviews at the Mumbai and Delhi embassies are most common for NYC-bound students.
OPT and Career Outcomes
NYC’s job market is the most competitive — and most rewarding — in the USA. Finance, consulting, technology, and media all recruit heavily from NYC universities. STEM graduates get 3 years of OPT work authorisation. Columbia’s engineering school and NYU’s Tandon School both have strong STEM OPT eligibility.
Scholarships
- Columbia offers need-based aid for some international master’s students — always apply and declare financial need
- NYU Merit Scholarships — available for high-achieving applicants
- CUNY Graduate Center Fellowships for PhD students
- External: Fulbright-Nehru, Inlaks, Tata Scholarships (Cornell, but nearby)
