Most Indian families I speak with assume Canada is only for postgraduate students — an MS or MBA after engineering or graduation. But Canada is also an excellent option after Class 12, for a full Bachelor’s degree. And in many ways, a Canadian undergraduate degree gives you more time to build your Canadian life, qualify for longer work permits, and build a stronger path to PR. At UniquestPrep, we help Class 12 students and their families understand exactly what this path looks like.

Why Consider Canada for Your Bachelor’s Degree?

  • World-class universities — University of Toronto, UBC, McGill are consistently top 50 globally
  • Longer post-study work permit — A 4-year bachelor’s qualifies you for a 3-year PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit)
  • Strong pathway to Canadian PR — More years in Canada = stronger Express Entry profile
  • Affordable compared to the USA — Tuition at Canadian universities is 30–40% lower than comparable US universities
  • Safe and welcoming country — Canada has one of the highest quality of life ratings globally
  • Work while you study — 20 hours per week off-campus work permitted

Study Permit for Class 12 Students Going to Canada

The study permit process is the same regardless of whether you are going for a bachelor’s or master’s:

  1. Receive your Letter of Acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI)
  2. Apply online for a study permit at IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada)
  3. Show proof of funds: approximately CAD 22,895 for living expenses (per year) plus tuition

The PR Pathway After a Bachelor’s in Canada

This is the biggest long-term advantage of doing your undergraduate in Canada. After a 4-year degree:

  • You qualify for a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
  • 3 years of Canadian work experience makes you a very strong Express Entry candidate for Permanent Residency
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) actively target graduates from Canadian universities
  • Many of my students who went for a bachelor’s degree in Canada in their early years are now Canadian permanent residents

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I go to Canada directly after Class 12?

Yes, absolutely. Many Indian students go directly after completing Class 12 (CBSE, ICSE, or State Board) for a bachelor’s degree in Canada.

Is IELTS mandatory for Canada after Class 12?

Yes, English proficiency proof is required. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall is the minimum for most universities, with no band below 6.0.

What percentage in Class 12 is needed for Canada?

Generally 75% and above. For competitive programs at top universities (CS at UofT, Engineering at UBC), aim for 85–90%+.

Is it better to do a bachelor’s or master’s in Canada?

Both are valid paths. A bachelor’s gives you more years in Canada and a longer PGWP. A master’s is faster (1–2 years). The right choice depends on your age, budget, and long-term goals — I help families think through this in every consultation.
