PTE Academic 2026: Format, Scoring, and Tips for Indian Students

· Nisha Bajpai · 4 min read

Quick Answer

PTE Academic is a 2-hour, fully computer-based English test scored 10-90, and results are usually out within 1-2 business days. It is accepted by Australia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland for both university admission and student visas, and many students find it faster to prepare for than IELTS because the format rewards clear, natural speech over memorised phrases.

Over the last two years, I have watched more and more of my students switch from IELTS to PTE Academic, and honestly, for the right kind of student, it is often the smarter choice. If you are applying to Australia, the UK, Canada, or New Zealand and you have not seriously considered PTE, this post is for you.

What PTE Academic actually is

PTE Academic is a two-hour, fully computer-delivered English test owned by Pearson. You sit at a computer, wear a headset, and complete all four skills — speaking, writing, reading, listening — in one continuous sitting instead of separate sections with breaks. There is no in-person speaking interview like IELTS. You speak into a microphone and the AI-assisted scoring system evaluates you alongside human reviewers.

The score range is 10-90, and it comes out in 1-2 business days for almost everyone. I have had students get their score back in under 24 hours. That speed alone changes how you plan your application timeline, especially if you are cutting it close to a deadline.

Why I recommend it to certain students

In my experience, PTE tends to suit two kinds of students particularly well:

Students who read fluently but freeze up in a face-to-face speaking test. Because PTE’s speaking tasks are structured (repeat the sentence, describe the image, retell the lecture), students who get nervous with a live examiner often score better here. There is no small talk, no follow-up questions you cannot predict.

Students on a tight timeline. If your application deadline is 3-4 weeks away and you still need an English score, PTE’s fast turnaround and easy rebooking make it far less risky than IELTS, where a bad result can mean losing 2 weeks just waiting for a retest slot.

That said, if you are naturally a strong conversational speaker and get energy from talking to a real person, IELTS’s face-to-face format can actually work in your favour. I always tell students: this is not about which test is “easier,” it’s about which format suits how your brain works under pressure.

The format, section by section

  1. Speaking and Writing (combined, ~54-67 minutes): Read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image, retell lecture, answer short question, summarise written text, and one essay.
  2. Reading (~29-30 minutes): Fill in the blanks, multiple choice, and reorder paragraphs.
  3. Listening (~30-43 minutes): Summarise spoken text, fill in the blanks, highlight correct summary, and more.

The tricky part for most Indian students is that PTE scores you on integrated skills. Your “describe image” answer in the speaking section, for example, also feeds into your reading and writing scores because the algorithm is checking grammar, vocabulary range, and fluency across everything you produce, not just the section it appears in. This surprises a lot of students who assume each section is scored in isolation.

Where Indian students lose the most marks

From correcting hundreds of practice tests, three patterns show up again and again:

  • Speaking too fast to sound “fluent.” The scoring actually rewards steady pacing and clear pauses at commas and full stops, not speed. Slow down and you will often score higher.
  • Skipping the “reorder paragraphs” task. It carries real weight in the reading score and most students never practise it because it feels tedious. Do at least 20 of these before test day.
  • Not using the on-screen timer strategically. Many students run out of time on the essay because they spend too long planning. Aim to start writing within 3 minutes of reading the prompt.

A simple 3-week plan

If you already speak comfortably in English and just need to learn the test format, here is what I set my students up with:

  • Week 1: Learn every question type once, do a full mock test to get your baseline score, and note your two weakest sections.
  • Week 2: Drill only those two weak sections daily, plus one full mock test at the end of the week.
  • Week 3: Two full mock tests under real time pressure, review every wrong answer, and rest the day before your actual exam.

Pearson’s official “Scored Practice Tests” are worth the money, since they are the only ones that give you an AI score close to your real result. Free YouTube practice will help you learn the format but will not tell you an accurate score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PTE Academic accepted for Canada, UK, and Australia study visas?
Yes. Australia's Department of Home Affairs, UK Visas and Immigration, and Immigration New Zealand all accept PTE Academic for student visas. Canada accepts it for most university admissions, though IRCC only began accepting PTE for some Canadian immigration streams recently, so always check the specific visa category before booking.
What score do I need on PTE for a good university?
Most Russell Group UK universities and Australian Group of Eight universities ask for 58-65 overall, with no section below 50-59. Top programmes, especially at Melbourne, ANU, or UCL, sometimes ask for 65-73 overall. Always check the specific programme page since requirements vary by course.
How is PTE different from IELTS?
PTE is entirely computer-delivered and machine-scored, so there is no face-to-face speaking interview, and results come in 1-2 days instead of 5-13 days for IELTS. PTE also blends skills within tasks, for example describing an image tests both speaking and organising ideas, whereas IELTS tests each skill more separately.
Can I retake PTE if I am not happy with my score?
Yes, you can rebook a PTE Academic slot as soon as 24 hours after your last attempt, and slots are often available within a week in most Indian cities. This is faster than IELTS, where many centres only offer retest dates weeks out.
How many weeks should I prepare for PTE Academic?
Three to four weeks of focused practice is enough for most students who already have intermediate English, since PTE rewards familiarity with its specific question types more than raw vocabulary. Students starting from a weaker base should plan for 6-8 weeks.
Does PTE test scores expire?
PTE Academic scores are valid for two years from your test date, the same validity period as IELTS and TOEFL. Make sure your score is still valid on the date you submit your visa application, not just your admission application.
